Anduze Pots – Why they’re our must have planter!

With their distinctive shape and authentic, aged markings, Anduze pots are instantly recognisable.  They provide the perfect frame for doorways when planted at low level, or avenues with traditional orange and lemon trees.  We love working with Anduze pots because of both their incredible history and the timeless elegance they bring to any large, planted display.

We have been extremely fortunate to secure only a small number of these pots, and we can only buy them as they become available.  We are delighted to be able to share them with you.

Throughout Provence, the Anduze planter has been used to grace the doorways and gardens of great houses, chateaux, and palaces.  Dating back to the rein of Henry IV, in the Cevenne region, the origins of the Anduze pot are shrouded in the mists of time.  Taking inspiration from the Italian Medici vase and using the emerging material of terracotta, an Anduze potter in Provence created what have become some of the most coveted decorative items available for gardens across the world.

Introduced by Marie Antoinette in abundance to the palaces of Versailles, the pots were produced in ever dwindling numbers after the French Revolution and have become increasingly rare ever since.  Due to the extremely limited number of master craftsmen able to make them, the pots are now only available occasionally and are highly sought after.
